The future of the swine industry depends on strong, passionate young leaders—and the California Pork Producers Association (CPPA) is committed to helping them grow. This July, CPPA sponsored a group of Junior Directors to attend the National Junior Swine Association’s (NJSA) Youth Leadership Conference (NYLC) in St. Louis, Missouri.
NYLC was created to give youth from across the country opportunities to strengthen their leadership, network with industry professionals, and gain firsthand knowledge of the pork industry. Over three action-packed days, attendees toured facilities such as Heimer Hampshires, The Maschhoffs, and the new St. Louis Airport import/export hub — each experience provided insights into both the commercial and showpig sides of our industry.
Representing CPPA were Junior Directors Jenna Freitas, Charli Auldridge, Lillie Benefield, Diego Loftin, and Riley Piehl. Reflecting on the trip, Riley shared, “My experience at NYLC was amazing. Getting to see friends from all across the country is what makes this conference so special!” “Learning about the transport involved with all livestock was one of my favorite things to see. Having the opportunity to deeper explore the commercial and show side of the swine industry is so incredibly essential for youth in our nation” she explained.

Kade Backman, son of Small Town Genetics producer James Backman and a junior CPPA member, also attended. He described the experience as unforgettable:
“To me, the conference was really cool. I loved going to all the different places that I would never have thought I would see…one of my favorite things I have done!”
Events like NYLC show how vital it is to invest in the next generation of agricultural leaders. These students return home with new knowledge, stronger connections, and a deeper commitment to the pork industry.

NJSA will soon be gathering feedback from this year’s participants as they look toward future conferences. CPPA extends its gratitude to the NJSA for hosting such an impactful event—and to our Junior Directors for representing California with pride.
